Seventeen Years Before
While chaos begins at Sterling High, a flashback of Lacy's prenatal class occurs. Alex and Lacy finally meet, when Judge Cormier enters the midwifes world. A more closer look into Lacy's life is examined. Her household consisted of the typical average family, but with secret expectations. In this chapter the viewpoint is seen from Lacy. The audience understands that the love for her first child is much different from her second son Peter when the author states, " But somehow, she'd expected that this second foray into motherhood would produce a child like her first-Joey, a golden boy...."(27). Peter, the different son is a handful from birth, and still possesses unique traits that make him "different". Later in the chapter Lacy helps Alex give birth to her new daughter Josie. This bond that occurs earlier in the story offers a symbolic relationship that will reoccur throughout the novel.
